Pupa +

Pupa +, 2018

Created for Jungle Love Festival in Imbil, Queensland Australia, Pupa + is a large-scale outdoor installation that explores transformation, growth, and the hidden potential of discarded materials. Constructed from up-cycled plastic milk bottles, the work reimagines everyday waste as a dynamic sculptural form that responds to its natural environment.

Painted with neon fluorescent pigments and activated by remotely timed UV lighting, the installation underwent a dramatic shift between day and night. In daylight, the work revealed its intricate structure and material origins; after dark, it transformed into a luminous organic presence, glowing within the festival landscape. This changing appearance reflected themes of metamorphosis and emergence suggested by the title.

By combining recycled materials, light, and site-specific installation, Pupa + invited audiences to engage with the work as both an environmental statement and an immersive visual experience, highlighting possibilities for renewal, adaptation, and creative reuse within contemporary art practice.
