BRISBANE STREET ART FESTIVAL - BSAF 2019 Art Award

Within these Walls : Exhibition Brisbane

Presented as part of the Within these Walls group exhibition for the Brisbane Street Art Festival - BSAF 2019, Dis-me and Black Mountain utilise textile-led studio research to confront interconnected crises of social and environmental violence. Through an innovative methodology of dimensional drawing, these works employ a tactile vocabulary to challenge systemic trauma while cultivating paths toward structural harmony.

Dis-me reflects the urgent global crisis of gender-based violence, serving as an evocative visual conduit to amplify the voice for systemic change. Conversely, Black Mountain serves as an interrogation of the Australian landscape, honouring its ecological value and emphasising the vital necessity of environmental stewardship.

The conceptual framework of both sculptures is rooted in material consciousness. By intentionally integrating up-cycled plastic milk bottles, reclaimed fabrics, and handmade blankets, the work encodes sustainable awareness directly into its structural form. Eschewing purely superficial decoration, the labour-intensive line extensions and rhythmic stitching create a site for emotive reflection. The domestic warmth of the blankets acts as a container for memory, grounding the viewer in a quiet, meditative context. Ultimately, these pieces invite the public into an open dialogue where social awareness, personal healing, and an urgent reconnection to the earth are co-created in the moment.
